Aromatherapy Certification Requirements and How To Become A Certified Aromatherapist
When considering an aromatherapy career, it is important to understand aromatherapy certification requirements. As of yet, there are no “formal” post-secondary accreditation degree programs on how to become a certified aromatherapist that is recognized by the United States Department of Education, which entails a voluntary, independent review of an educational program by a nongovernmental agency to determine that the education provided is of uniform and sound quality.
Nor is aromatherapy recognized as medical science, and aromatherapists are not, of course, medical professionals, neither can they “practice” as a medical practitioner with a certificate in aromatherapy alone. Consequently, there is no license required to practice aromatherapy and no regulation by law as such.
Moreover, while there are no boards that license professional aromatherapists in the United States, it is for this reason, aromatherapy organizations such as the NAHA (the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists) and the AIA (the Alliance of International Aromatherapists) have sought to establish a protocol for evaluating the quality of aromatherapy certification programs offered by schools in the United States and internationally. Approved schools are recognized as having met their educational requirements set forth. Aroma Hut Institute is a NAHA Approved School Educator for their Aromatherapy Certification Program in becoming an aromatherapist.
NAHA Approved School and What This Means on How To Become a Certified Aromatherapist
Since 2013, Aroma Hut Institute has gained an international reputation for excellence in aromatherapy education. Our main course in Professional and Clinical Aromatherapy is a comprehensive, integrated training program with a dynamic blend of scientific and holistic therapeutic approaches. Aroma Hut Institute’s program has been carefully designed to provide students with all the necessary skills and knowledge to practice Clinical Aromatherapy safely and effectively, and also, serves as a specialist training resource for those pursuing careers in the expanding essential oil product industries.
As a student, it is important to know the school you attend meets the educational standards set by leading organizations such as NAHA. Aroma Hut Institute is a NAHA approved school and is unique in that it
- seeks to elevate the study of aromatherapy in the eyes of the public through public service via radio, television, and social media,
- unite aromatherapists to advance research and professionalism in the industry,
- and, most importantly, provides the highest quality aromatherapy program available to prospective students of aromatherapy.
Currently, Aroma Hut Institute is only one of the 31 aromatherapy certification programs in the United States that meet the stringent requirements set forth by the NAHA. With so few schools recognized as approved school providers, it is apparent the very rigorous educational standards established by this organization are high.
The Importance of Choosing a NAHA or AIA Approved School
As a NAHA approved school, Aroma Hut Institute offers a Certified Aromatherapy program with two levels; the Foundations Level I (30 hours in-person training + 20 hours online) and Level I (100 hours online training) and Level II Certified Aromatherapist program (270 hours) that exceeds the course requirements NAHA has established as a required curriculum that any qualified aromatherapist who will be providing services to the public should take. Among the many necessary facets for Level I certification, for example, includes developing a working knowledge of certain required essential oils and thorough mastery of safety procedures when using them. Basic anatomy such as the limbic and lymphatic systems are studied in Level 1.
For the Level II Certified Aromatherapist program, the course requirements are much more rigorous. As a NAHA-approved school, Aroma Hut Institute exceeds the 200-hour minimum for the Certified Aromatherapist program with over 270+ hours. Aroma Hut students must complete the Level 1 program either in-person with 30 contact hours, or by completing the online Level 1 program of 100 hours of study. Upon completion of either course, the student can advance to Level 2 and will be trained in how to use oils to benefit various systems of the human body, such as the respiratory or digestive systems. The basic chemistry of the chemical families is also taught at this level.
Aroma Hut Institute’s Aromatherapy Certification Program integrates anatomy and physiology into the curriculum in relation to the part of the training that goes over the structure and function of each body system. Pre-existing health and medical professionals are still required to complete training in the application of essential oils for each system and the effect of essential oils on a variety of common ailments.
To receive a certificate of completion, the student will need to complete all lessons and quizzes, create blends and products covered throughout the course, perform and complete ten case studies, and write an 8-10 page research paper on any aromatherapy topic of their choice.
This Aromatherapy Certification Course meets and surpasses the qualifications for the NAHA Level Two: Professional Aromatherapy Certification Program by The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.

Upon completion of the Certification Program, the student may call themselves a Certified Aromatherapist, using the initials “C.A.” after their name.
